How Do You Teach Character?

The Practice of Leadership has a post on Building the Character of Our Future LeadersThe 5 E’s they advocate (Example, Education, Environment, Experience and Evaluation) are probably appropriate for teaching any subject, but work well here.  This topic is even more important in the non-profit world.  We have a resposiblity to our donors, to the community and to the youth and teens that we are role models to.   This model also works for those of us trying to enable teens to build their own moral compass.  It can easily be incorporated into leadership groups.  Don’t be afraid of thinking of your athletic teams and dance squads as leadership groups too.

If you need an example of someone with character or want to be inspired, check out this story on Fox Sports of a teen who made his college basketball team with only one hand.
