Online Predators

Nate Anderson has some study results from the American Academy of Pediatrics survey of 10-15 year-olds.  It notes that online predators are more likely to approach kids through Instant Messaging and chat rooms than through social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook.  Doing the math, however, you find that 5% of these middle school youth have been approached.  That means that for every 20 kids in a (smaller than normal) classroom, there is one who has been approached on MySpace or Facebook.  I’m not advocating closing down the Internet, but we have to be careful and protect our youth.  How does your organization protect their kids online?

Update: Here’s another study with some more positive news including that 50% of youth online discuss homework.

  1. Yeah… they share answers and cheat. Then, when they all hand it in wrong, they all fail. trust me - my wife is a teacher and it happens constantly. all the more reason for parents to get monitoring software.
