Marketing to Teens
Shaping Youth has information on companies marketing to teens in More Schlock. They talk about energy drinks and candy designed to mimic drugs and the Lolita bed line for girls. Products those of us who work with teens should be aware of to counteract their influence.
Microsoft is going in the other direction with a program to teach teens the laws surrounding intellectual property. CNN/Money has an article about Microsoft’s free new program to educate teens on intellectual property rights.
Campus Squeeze just wants to help teens do well in school with Top 10 Web Tool s for College Students, many of which would be helpful for high school students too.

Hi Joe, I’ve bookmarked your blog for Shaping Youth and would love your input on some of the issues we cover on an ongoing basis. We have a couple of advisors locally from Boys/Girls Clubs but really find it helpful to have multiple regions and pockets of leadership to receive feedback and gauge what’s working and what isn’t. (hey, maybe we could even ‘test’ some of our counter-marketing programs with ya, once we get them into ‘train the trainer’ dvd format, as teens are a key part of our advisory board!)
Right now we’re tracking the energy drinks mixed with alcohol phenom and doing some counter-marketing in that direction. What age groups do you work with? Teens only or tweens too?
You’ve got some great themes going here, so when my computer system comes back from my crash (on a loaner now) I may even try to snag you for a phone or e-interview? We’re running a series on bullying/relational aggression right now which is finishing up next week, and I’m about to reg. for the CyberSafety summit in L.A. 3/4 so could perhaps be a resource for you in the digital realm too. Let’s keep in touch! Best, Amy
