Strength Based Leadership
George Ambler at The Practice of Leadership asks, Where is Your Focus? George uses a story about the flying Wallendas to make his point. He ends by asking,
When we focus on our strengths it’s amazing how our weaknesses take care of themselves. Where is your focus? Is it on your areas of strength? Is it on what you want to create?
I find focusing on strengths very valuable. I am optimistic by nature. I think that if we think outside the box, we can find ways for different personalities and skill sets to accomplish the same task. This can be difficult for leaders who are watching someone else do their old job. Just because they aren’t doing it “my way” doesn’t mean they aren’t doing it well. They bring different strengths and skills to the table. It took me a couple of tries to start knowing the difference between someone doing it differently than I would vs. simply doing it wrong.
This is also a good way to get untracked. When you are stuck, look at the problem and how you can attack it with your strengths, rather than the traditional way of completing the task.
