Eating Healthy When Working Late
The Optimized Executive offers advice on trying to Make Healthy Choices at the Vending Machine. Many in the non-profit world work late and skip dinner, particularly those who work with teens and stay open until 9:00 p.m. or later. I know that early in my career, there were many nights when a snickers and a coke was my dinner of choice. While I got by with that when I was younger, it didn’t help my energy level or waistline. I’ve gotten better about keeping water, apples, almonds and granola bars in my office. They taste good, aren’t as greasy and you feel better later. The key for me is regular grocery shopping to keep my desk stocked. It also helps that our Club no longer sells soda and the only chips in the vending machine are baked.
Taking care of yourself is a major compenent of Getting Things Done as you can get a lot more done with a high energy level. It is one of Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. He calls it Sharpening the Saw.
