Making the Right Hire

The Practtice of Leadership has Mistakes We’ve all Made.  I have committed many of these including the first-

Hiring too fast and firing too slow.

There is nothing more important than who is on the bus.  Here are some links about hiring new staff:

Penelope Trunk at the Brazen Careerist has New Ways to Get Great Staff.

Seth Godin on resumes.  As someone who plows through resumes, I couldn’t agree more (although we still ask for resumes).  I can only think of one great hire that didn’t come recommended through our network of colleagues.

The HR Capitalist talks about replacing second interviews.  I agree with this method.  We have staff run programs with our kids before we hire them.  We call it the deer in the headlights test.  We don’t do it as well for administrative staff.  I like some of their ideas for that.
