What’s Possible?

Tim Ferris, in The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, makes a great point:

It’s lonely at the top. Ninety-nine percent of people in the world are convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre. The level of competition is thus fiercest for ‘realistic’ goals, paradoxically making them the most time-consuming and energy consuming. It is easier to raise $10,000,000 than it is $1,000,000. It is easier to pick up the one perfect 10 in the bar than the five 8s. 4. The fishing is best where the fewest go, and the collective insecurity of the world makes it easy for people to hit home runs while everyone is aiming for base hits.

The question is, how do we unleash our staff to achieve great things.  The more we empower them and take the reins off, the more likely they will be able to do special things.

On a related note, Trizoko asks “Can a Kid Run Your Company?”  He makes the point that McDonalds runs a billion dollar company on the backs of teenagers.  This type of thinking may be what is necessary to unleash the potential of our part-time or inexperienced staff to be great.  Within the structure of a system, they can be given the freedom to be creative.  For example, we may announce the next prorgam for them based on the clock, but they would use their energy and creativity to make the program their own and therefore special to our kids.
